All About FCPS

FCPS Part 1:

  1. Purpose: FCPS Part 1 is the initial step in the FCPS qualification process, and it primarily tests a candidate’s knowledge in various medical and surgical disciplines. It is a theoretical examination designed to assess a candidate’s grasp of fundamental medical concepts.

  2. Eligibility: To be eligible for FCPS Part 1, candidates usually need to have completed their basic medical degree, such as MBBS, and fulfill any specific requirements set by the relevant College of Physicians and Surgeons in their country.

  3. Examination Format: FCPS Part 1 typically consists of a written examination with multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The MCQs cover various medical subjects and are designed to evaluate the candidate’s understanding of the basics of medicine and surgery.

  4. Passing Criteria: The passing score for FCPS Part 1 can vary depending on the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the country in which the examination is taken. Candidates must achieve a minimum score to pass and move on to FCPS Part 2.

  5. Preparation: Candidates preparing for FCPS Part 1 often use textbooks, study guides, and online resources to review the required subjects. It’s essential to have a strong foundation in general medicine and surgery to excel in this examination.

FCPS Part 2:

  1. Purpose: FCPS Part 2 is the practical and clinical component of the FCPS qualification process. It assesses a candidate’s clinical skills and their ability to apply medical knowledge in real-life patient care scenarios.

  2. Eligibility: To be eligible for FCPS Part 2, candidates generally need to have successfully passed FCPS Part 1 and completed their internship or clinical training. Specific requirements can vary between medical specialties.

  3. Examination Format: FCPS Part 2 examinations involve practical and clinical assessments, which can include Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), objective structured practical examinations, and oral/viva voce assessments. These exams require candidates to demonstrate their clinical competence, problem-solving skills, and communication with patients.

  4. Specialization: FCPS Part 2 is specific to the candidate’s chosen medical specialty or subspecialty. For example, a candidate aiming to become an FCPS in Surgery will undergo a different assessment than one seeking FCPS in Medicine.

  5. Passing Criteria: Candidates must meet the passing criteria for FCPS Part 2, which may include demonstrating competence in patient management, surgical skills (if applicable), and the ability to handle clinical scenarios effectively.

  6. Training: Candidates often undertake structured clinical training during the period leading up to FCPS Part 2. This training can occur in recognized hospitals and institutions specializing in the chosen medical field.

Successfully completing FCPS Part 2 leads to the award of the FCPS qualification in the chosen medical specialty, which signifies a high level of expertise and competence in that field.

In summary, FCPS Part 1 is the theoretical examination assessing basic medical knowledge, while FCPS Part 2 is the practical and clinical assessment specific to the chosen medical specialty. Together, they form the process for earning the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons and becoming a specialist in a medical discipline. Keep in mind that specific details and requirements for FCPS may vary by country and the institution awarding the qualification.
